"MADISON RIVER CANYON EARTHQUAKE AREA'

Photos below provide some pictorial views of a severe earthquake that caused a massive landslide on August 17, 1959.  This was one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded on the North American Continent striking the Madison River Canyon.  It measured 7.5 on the Richter scale, sending over 80 million tons of rock crashing down into the canyon, blocking the Madison River.  The water blocked up behind the rocks forming the new Earthquake Lake.
